The recorded history of Iceland began with the settlement by Viking explorers and their slaves from the east, particularly Norway and the British Isles. Narratives of this time period can be read in the historical Icelandic Sagas.
This Reykjavik landmark (above) is called the Sun Voyager. It is a common misunderstanding that it represents a Viking ship. Obviously, any work of art is left up to the observer to interpret its meaning. In its most simplistic meaning....the ship represents the promise of new, undiscovered territory and commemorates the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavik (circa 1986).
It's been raining for the past few days....and we finally got a decent day to take a long walk around the shoreline. We've quickly adjusted to the cold Iceland weather. It's actually warming up! Our hotel is in a perfect location to allow us to visit the many restaurants, shops, and attractions all around town. Good for us because we're stranded here for an extra three days! :)
